The science

How medication takes on herpes

With the help of treatment, millions of Australians live healthy, normal lives.
Medication illustration
Reduce viral shedding
Daily suppressive therapy can reduce viral shedding by 70-80%. This means outbreaks occur less often and are less severe, with transmission risk becoming much lower.
DNA Illustration
Block viral DNA replication
Medication blocks the herpes virus’ polymerase enzyme, which stops the infection from replicating. This limits the severity of outbreaks and lowers transmission risk.
Shield illustration
Maximise protection
For genital herpes, the risk of transmission to a partner if using antiviral medication is around 2% per year. With condoms as well, it’s less than 1%.

Pilot Customer
What kind of treatments are available for herpes?
There are two treatment options available for herpes: One involves suppressive therapy that requires daily antiviral medication. This reduces the chance of outbreaks by 80% while also reducing transmission risk by around 50%.

The second option is outbreak therapy, which involves a one-off course of antibiotics that shortens the duration of flare-ups, while also reducing the severity of symptoms.

What do I need to know about side effects?
Uncommon but normal side effects include headaches, nausea, tiredness, or mild stomach pain. These usually go away within a few days or weeks once your body adjusts to the medication. If at any time you experience side effects, you can message your Pilot practitioner for a free follow-up consult.

Are cold sores and herpes the same thing?
Yes, they’re effectively the same virus. Cold sores are caused by the HSV-1 strain of the herpes simplex virus. These sores most commonly appear around the mouth but can be transmitted to the genitals. The HSV-2 strain commonly presents as genital herpes, but can be transmitted to the mouth too.

For most people, the first few outbreaks after infection are the most severe, but these generally occur less often and become less painful over time, especially with the help of medication.
